Springfield’s Latest Bolt Action Is Born To Hunt As Proved On A Major Hunt In Africa
In early August, Springfield Armory launched its latest version of the Model 2020, the Boundary. Designed as a dedicated hunter, the Boundary’s long action easily handles longer magnum cartridges in a lightweight package.
A carbon-fiber stock and carbon-fiber barrel help trim ounces, if not pounds, from a full-featured big-game rifle. Once I got my hands on a 7mm PRC, I didn’t spend much time shooting groups after shooting a couple of five-shot 0.75-MOA groups. I gathered some velocity data and followed up by shooting groups in 100-yard increments out to 700 yards to confirm come-ups for the adjustable optic I mounted. This was in preparation for an African safari in mid-July, where the Boundary would get a chance to down some exotic game.
While in South Africa, this new rifle accounted for game as big as zebra and wildebeest and as small as a baboon. The combination of the rifle and cartridge worked well in close quarters in thorny cover and at long range. The baboon was a center-mass kill at a laser-measured 494 yards. I do not doubt its effectiveness on elk and deer, either.
The heart of the Boundary is the Model 2020 action, which features dual locking lugs on a fluted bolt that runs down EDM raceways for smooth cycling. In addition, an optimized extraction cam provides robust, reliable operation in any condition.
A few other key features of the Model 2020 action include a low-profile bolt stop, 90-degree bolt throw, and a removable bolt knob, as well as a Picatinny rail with two recoil pins. The top of the action mimics a Remington 700 long action, which gives you the highest degree of flexibility for aftermarket optics mounting.
This action’s lock time—the interval from trigger break to primer strike—is fast. The Model 2020 boasts a lightning-fast 1.9 milliseconds primer strike, outpacing competitors by up to 45 percent. Swift lock time minimizes deviation from aim.
The barreled action on the Model 2020 Boundary is precisely fitted to a 100% carbon-fiber AG Precision Sportsman stock with hand-painted Rogue camouflage. Two front and rear QD flush cups and a 1-inch Pachmayr Decelerator pad enhance shooting comfort.
Additionally, the Boundary’s TriggerTech Field trigger boasts a low-profile, non-snag safety and employs Frictionless Release Technology for a smooth pull. It is adjustable from 2.5 to 5 pounds. If you want to save a few bucks on a new Boundary, the fluted stainless steel barrel versions only weigh 2 ounces more than its carbon-barreled counterpart. Several other cartridge choices include .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .300 PRC, .300 Win Mag and 7mm Rem Mag.
Springfield’s marketing team came up with the slogan “Know no bounds.” Without question, it’s a fitting one, indeed. Check out all of the available options at springfield-armory.com.

Pairs Well With: Remington’s New CuT Ammo
Remington CuT ammo, which accounted for nine different African game animals from smell-their-breath range to nearly 500 yards. And the 7mm PRC CuT has helped fill my freezer with mule deer and elk, too. This copper-tipped, 160-grain bullet leaves the barrel at 3,000 fps and stays flat with a .596 BC. Sold in 20-count boxes. MRSP: $82 (remington.com)
