Watch “Boat Somewhere” & Jam With Rising Star Colin Stough

Cruising over rippling waters with the wind in his hair for his new video for “Boat Somewhere” wasn’t a stretch by any means for rising country artist Colin Stough. It’s something he’s enjoyed most of his life.

As you can see for yourself in our exclusive early sneak peek, the leisurely action takes place on beautiful Smith Lake in north-central Alabama. Stough happily spent much of his spare time there as a youngster before moving across the state line into Mississippi along the Tombigbee River.

The footage was directed by West Webb and Luke Lowder, and it was shot at Smith Lake – between the Birmingham and Huntsville metro areas in North Alabama.

Colin Stough’s Boat Life

“I’ve just always loved being on the water since I was a kid,” says Stough, who is transitioning from his success on American Idol into life as a Nashville recording artist. “Later on, when I got a little older, I’d get off work and we’d hit the river. It was just a routine thing.”

The title of the song alone conjures up a feeling of freedom. That was Stough’s first thought, too, when his friend and co-writer Dawson Edwards suggested it.

“I know a lot about the water and he does, too, so we just kinda took a stab at it,” he says. So far, he’s been really pleased with the response to their efforts.

“Everybody likes it and everybody can relate to it,” Stough says. “I think everybody’d rather be on the water than working a job.”

DIY Camo Johnboat

Besides his carefree attitude in the video, something else that will likely catch your eye is that sweet Boston Whaler, which in real life belongs to the father of Stough’s fiancée, McKenzie. It’s certainly more photogenic than the haphazardly spray-painted vessel described in the lyrics. For that detail, he drew on his personal experience.

“Growing up, my buddy had this flat-bottom johnboat with a little Yamaha motor on the back of it. I helped him paint it brown and green and we used to put it in the pond and go fishing,” Stough recalls. “It was homemade camouflage, and I think it took us about 20 minutes to do it.”

“Boat Somewhere” Is Perfect For Days On The Water

Many recording artists dream of hearing their songs on the radio. With “Boat Somewhere,” Stough has experienced something that somehow seems even cooler.

“We’ve actually been on the water recently and heard people in other boats playing it,” he says.

More On Stough’s Life & EP Lookin’ For Home

“Boat Somewhere” is a fun song with a swampy groove and a sassy attitude, but Stough also tackles some more serious topics on his new EP, Lookin’ For Home. He’s a co-writer on all six cuts, and the standout tracks include “Sober” and “Amen.” He’s out on the road now and is opening shows soon for Midland as well as Chase Matthew before starting a co-headlining tour.

While the guy in his new song ditches his job for a day of goofing off on the lake, Stough says he likes to stay busy and isn’t afraid to work up a sweat. He was an HVAC technician before he got his big break in the music business, and his family has always kept horses, so he kept busy with farm-related chores. He is based in Nashville but regularly tends to six horses (and a miniature donkey that McKenzie has named Jelly Bean) on properties in Mississippi.

“I do music full time, but I have always loved manual labor ever since I was a kid,” says Stough, who turned 20 in July. “But I’ll tell you this: if they said we’re getting off at 5 and I got a phone call saying we were going to the river after work, at 5:01 I had already pulled out of the building.”
