This is certainly a first. Ruger just announced today that it is producing the first-ever lever-action rifle chambered in 10mm Auto: the Marlin Trapper Series Model 1894 in 10mm is launching in conjunction with new 10mm LEVERevolution ammunition from Hornady.

"This first-of-its-kind lever-action rifle blends Marlin’s legendary craftsmanship with the versatility of 10mm Auto, setting a new standard for lever-action innovation," said Ruger in a release.

The new Model 1894 10mm is also the first of the series chambered for a semi-auto handgun cartridge — a rarity in the lever-gun world. This carbine also boasts the highest capacity of the rifle series with 10 rounds in a mag tube running beneath a barrel that's just a bit over 16 inches long. The .357 Magnum version of the Trapper with the same barrel length holds eight rounds.

That all makes for a handy, nimble carbine with serious power and a respectable ammo capacity.

The new carbine joins versions of the Trapper Model 1894 in .45-70 Govt., .30-30 Win., .44 Magnum, and .357 Magnum.

"Already known for its power and versatility as a semi-auto pistol cartridge, 10mm Auto delivers even greater performance when paired with a rifle-length barrel" says Ruger, Marlin's parent company. "The Trapper Series Model 1894 in 10mm Auto boasts an increased velocity of up to 250 fps compared to its pistol counterpart."

Based on the specs, this agile carbine would make for a respectable small-to-medium game getter, and would be more than adequate for self-defense and would make for a classic pairing with a 10mm Auto handgun, a popular choice for self-defense in bear country. You could get even more classic, with a modern twist, by pairing it with one of Ruger's 10mm wheelguns.

Like other models in the Trapper Series line, the new carbine features a cold hammer-forged, 16.17-inch threaded barrel and receiver-mounted Skinner Sight system that provides rapid target acquisition. Additionally, the stainless steel receiver, lever, magazine tube and barrel feature a non-glare, satin finish.

In addition to the features for which the Trapper Series line is known, the new Trapper Model 1894 10mm has an upgraded fire control system. The sear is now e-nickel Teflon-plated and the sear notch geometry in the hammer has been improved to create a smoother and more consistent trigger feel. Plus, in response to consumer feedback, the sear and trigger system have been redesigned to eliminate the trigger “flop.”

Optimized for lever-action rifles, new Hornady LEVERevolution 10mm Auto ammunition features a 150-grain FTX bullet and the cartridge overall is engineered for lever-actions. The ammo will also work great in revolvers and semi-auto handguns, too.

"This collaboration underscores Ruger and Hornady’s shared commitment to innovation, performance and delivering products that enhance the shooting experience for customers everywhere," Ruger says.
