This California-Based Farm Aims To Please & Reminds You To Floss!

Did you know that the jerky industry was valued at $4.98 billion in 2023? It’s no surprise, really. Dried meat plus the right amount of seasonings can satisfy hungry bellies at any given time on any given budget. From gas stations to organic butchers, jerky is nothing short of ubiquitous. Ask any hunter what they have in their pack—chances are there’s some jerky stowed in there. Even astronauts have been sent to outer space with a few bags of jerky courtesy of NASA. Who knew that this rather unpretentious snack that got its start around a campfire in South America over four hundred years ago would one day be making its way around the globe in more ways than one?

I’m no stranger to jerky. As a native Texan, it’s a regular fixture in my pantry. No one needs to twist my arm to get me to try a new jerky brand—I can tell you I was more than willing to give StarWalker Farms’ jerky a try when my editor suggested I do a taste test.

Prior to tasting, I had to first judge this book by its cover. In learning about StarWalker Farms, what stood out to me was their commitment to sustainable, raised-organic-in-the-USA farming practices. However, the cherry on top of the whole shebang was their inclusion of an honest-to-goodness tooth flosser in each bag of jerky. Let’s be honest, no one’s teeth are safe from getting jerky bits wedged in between them. That’s forward-thinking!

Now for the tasting. For those looking for a delicious option for organic beef jerky, trust me when I say I made sure to perform a thorough examination of each of the three flavors.

Jerky Number One: Simply Salt & Pepper

All right, off to the races with a classic recipe. Not too salty, not too peppery—just right! The meat tastes clean and doesn’t feel like processed mystery cow parts. I’d give this to anyone who has little-to-no experience with jerky, it’s a perfect intro.

Jerky Number 2: Carne Asada

And it’s off to the South of the Border we go! If your go-to meal at a Mexican restaurant is carne asada, then you’ll love this jerky. The meat is softer and has a solid balance of flavorful spices to give off the right amount of heat.

Jerky Number 3: Cherrywood Smoked

Ok, this one is my favorite. In the spirit of full transparency, I prefer jerky that has a slight toughness to it, a jerky that snaps when you break off a piece to share. I also love the touch of smokiness in the meat that adds to the flavor.

Now that I’ve met my daily protein goal with three different types of hearty organic beef jerky, I think it’s time to floss!
