Two New Double-Stack Kimber 2K11s Are Ready To Rule The Range
Kimber just introduced its newest pistol, the 2K11, a double-stack 1911 variant built on what’s been dubbed the “2011” platform. Available in 9mm and .45 ACP, the 2K11 can be purchased as the standard 2K11 OR and the upgraded 2K11 Target OR. In both cases, “OR” stands for Optics Ready.
Regardless of the model, the .45 ACP pistols ship with three 13-round magazines, the 9mm’s with one 17-round magazine, and two 20-round mags. Barrels are 5 inches long and made of high-quality stainless steel.
Hook & Barrel INSIDER First Look At Kimber’s 2K11
I had the chance to run a 2K11 Target OR 9mm in July of this year at a media event hosted by Kimber. I shot over 200 rounds of 9mm range ammunition through my test 2K11 and came away very impressed. Below you’ll find my main takeaways from the July event.
SUPERB BALANCE: The pistol balanced nicely in hand and felt comfortable even when mag dumping—which I did more than once!
A REAL HEAVYWEIGHT: This is no lightweight. Lots of steel and that weight helped reduce recoil greatly even when shooting off rounds fast. The various models weigh in between 40.1 and 42.9 ounces unloaded.
SENSATIONAL SIGHTS: The fiber optic front post and the generous rear notch came to my eyes easily and quickly. The rear sight was fully adjustable. (See more on the TAG Precision sights below.)
GREAT ACCURACY: I had no problem placing 10 rounds into a half-dollar-sized group at 10 yards offhand. I’d bet my house that the pistol is even more accurate than my intro shooting with the handgun.
AN ASTHETIC BEAST: It looks cool. My test 2K11 Target OR sported what Kimber calls its Coyote PVD Coating on the slide, a kind of bronzish brown. The slide also featured wavy serrations and three cuts on each side, exposing the barrel and lightening the slide a bit.
AWESOME ERGOS: Deep checkering cut into the grip sides, front strap, and back strap made for a very solid hold. The competition-style mag well on the 2K11 Target OR was built in partnership with Stan Chen, one of the true masters building 1911 and 2011 custom pistols today. Magazines slid right into the 2K11 for fast reloads and popped out perfectly with a press of the release button.
More Kimber 2K11 Details
All 2K11 models ship with an adapter plate for optics designed with the RMR footprint. The Target models feature a cover plate with an adjustable rear sight. The pistols also feature fluted bull barrels with deep crowns.
The tapered mag wells stabilize the magazine during cycling, increasing reliability and protecting the slide stop and ejector.
All grip modules are crafted from aluminum with an aluminum main spring housing.
The match grade triggers are factory set at 3 to 4 pounds; mine provided a very crisp and clean break.
