Smith & Wesson just dropped two new rimfires that expand the company’s wildly popular M&P lineup. It’s no surprise, since this is the same brand that’s been shaping American firearms since 1852. First up is a .22 LR version of the folding M&P FPC, the M&P FPC 22LR carbine. Next is the new M&P 22X pistol; both offer low-recoil, low-cost shooting in platforms that mirror their 9mm centerfire counterparts.

Both models are clearly aimed at range time, training, and casual target shooting. While neither breaks new ground, they bring familiar M&P ergonomics and controls to the rimfire space, making them practical additions for anyone who already owns or carries an M&P, or for anyone looking to build solid fundamentals with less noise and recoil. They also open the door for new shooters — kids, spouses, or friends — who might be more comfortable starting with a low-recoil, full-size platform that doesn’t cut corners.

The M&P FPC (Folding Pistol Carbine) in .22 LR is a lightweight, compact carbine that folds horizontally for easy transport and storage. It features a 16.25-inch threaded barrel for suppressor use and a flat-face trigger. The gun ships with three 20-round magazines and features built-in storage in the stock to stow two spare mags. The M&P FPC also has M-LOK slots on the handguard and is topped with a Picatinny-style rail for easy mounting of optics. At just over 5 pounds, this carbine is a solid option for plinking, range fun, or popping small game.

The new Smith & Wesson M&P 22X comes with two 20-round magazines and is red-dot ready.

The M&P 22X is a full-size .22 LR pistol with a polymer frame and familiar M&P styling. This optics-ready pistol has a threaded barrel for a suppressor or compensator and features ambidextrous controls. It has a crisp, hammer-fired trigger and a slim, ergonomic grip.

The new M&P 22X comes with two 20-round magazines, so you can spend more time shooting and less time reloading. It is also available in a compliant version with 10-round mags. Like the carbine, it’s designed for compatibility and ease of use, whether for newer shooters or anyone looking for a cost-effective training tool.

With these two rimfires, Smith & Wesson is leaning into what makes the M&P line work: reliability, clean design, and familiar controls. Like most things S&W, these two firearms focus on functionality over flash.

These aren’t tactical warhorses, hunting-specific firearms, or even something you want to keep on the bedside table just in case. Instead, they’re smart additions to the brand’s broader lineup, especially for shooters who prioritize cross-platform consistency or simply like to enjoy recreational range time, and a great option for people to train with that has the same controls and feels as a larger-caliber M&P model.

The rimfire chambering makes them appealing not only for budget-conscious shooters but also for families, first-timers, and anyone looking to work on speed or fundamentals without the heavier expense of 9mm ammo.

Smith & Wesson hasn’t overhauled the formula here, and they didn’t need to. The M&P FPC and 22X expand the M&P ecosystem into a space that’s practical, accessible, and fun to shoot. Whether you’re building skills or burning through a brick of ammo on a Saturday, these new rimfires deliver M&P reliability in an easygoing, affordable package.
